Sprouts
Mar

to Sep 10

Sprouts

Sprouts is the name of our children and families ministry here at St John's. The name Sprouts comes from Mark 4 where Jesus talks about the kingdom of God being like a tiny seed that sprouts and grows into something significant. We believe that the children's ministry is really important. It's a time of small beginnings and seeing seeds grow as children become all that God has created them to be.

We meet at 10am, during school terms.

Patronal Festival Lunch

Patronal Festival Lunch

Come and celebrate with us! What is a Patronal Festival? It's the day we remember the Saint we are named after - in our case it is John the Baptist. He is a pretty cool guy to be named after. He spent his whole life pointing people to Jesus.

For us this day is a great chance to celebrate and give thanks for our church life together. Come ready with a plate of food to share and think of something you are grateful for. If you're new to church this is a great chance to get to know a few more people, we would love to see you there.

Spiritual Practices Preaching Series

Spiritual Practices Preaching Series

  • Google Calendar ICS

Lent is a time where we are invited to journey with God as Jesus journeyed in the desert. Jesus fasted and prayed for 40 days and Christians are invited to a time of prayer and fasting in Lent.

The point isn’t just to give stuff up, the point is to grow spiritually, to connect more deeply with Jesus. This Lent at St John’s every Sunday we are looking at spiritual practices for life: “Hearing and Obeying God”, “Sabbath”, “Generosity”, “Hospitality”, “Vocation”, “Celebration and Partying.”

If you want a good guide for the journey - this book on prayer is a good start:

Ash Wednesday Service
Mar

Ash Wednesday Service

  • St Mary's Anglican Church Timaru (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Ash Wednesday is the day marking the beginning of Lent. A cross is drawn on the foreheads of the members of the congregation and the words: “For dust you are and to dust you shall return” are recited. I know it doesn’t sound all that cheerful but the point is that we are mortal, we all experience the pain and brokenness of this fallen world and life just simply isn’t always wonderful. Ash Wednesday gives us the opportunity to our acknowledge our need for Jesus. Ash Wednesday is an invitation to humlity, and an invitation to repentance (acknolwedging we need Jesus and turning from our own ways to follow him). Come along and begin Lent with this special time of coming to Jesus for forgivness and hope.
